In 1983, Huazhong Institute of Technology (former HUST) was the first university specializing in engineering to establish the Department of Journalism, which was renamed the School of Journalism and Information Communication (SJIC) in 1998. Adhering to the characteristics of "application-oriented, interdisciplinary-featured", SJIC has been committed to the education reform and academic research innovation of journalism and communication discipline. With the discipline development philosophy of "future-oriented, discipline integration, mainstream concern and international vision", and based on Humanities & Social Sciences disciplines, SJIC implements the deep interdisciplinary integration of Literature, Engineering, Medicine and Management, which is widely concerned and highly praised by the journalism and communication community.

SJIC has a complete talent training chain from BA and MA to phD and postdoctoral, and is an important incubator for high-end talents in journalism and communication in mainland China. Our school was granted the right to confer master's degree and doctoral degree in 1996 and 2003 respectively, one of the first six journalism schools in mainland China to have the right to confer a doctorate. In 2007, SJIC established a post-doctoral mobile station for journalism and communication. Currently, outstanding postdoctoral fellows from all over the world are welcomed.

SJIC boasts a wide range of social impact and enjoys a high reputation. In the latest discipline assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education of the PRC, our school ranks third and is among top 5% in all the schools of journalism and communication in mainland China.

At present, there are 44 full-time faculty members and over 1,100 students in our school. Focal education and research areas include journalism, communication, new media, radio & television and digital media, advertising and media economics, and public relations. SJIC pays great attention to cultivating talents with professional philosophy, international vision and new technological thinking. Our school also lays emphasis on the balanced development between students' comprehensive quality and professionalism, theoretical foundation and professional skills, as well as practical spirit and innovative thinking.
